Welcome to the College of Education

- Dick Howell, COE Dean

One can hardly imagine more challenging times for educators than those we are faced with today! We find ourselves at a crossroads where the intersection of demand and quality have come front-and-center for the profession. The College of Education at the University of New Mexico is aware of and is responding to this clarion call for definitive reform of our educational systems. We are in a unique position in New Mexico, the first minority/majority state in the U.S. and one that exemplifies all the challenges of the 21st century. For example, we have the 27th largest urban public school district in the country here—in the Albuquerque Public Schools. We have a large number of rural and geographically isolated school districts throughout the fifth largest state in the nation. And we have a unique multilingual and multicultural environment that includes large immigrant populations of second-language learners.

We hope to have piqued your interest in this incredible setting, where the future of the nation’s education can be addressed today. New Mexico is a living laboratory for the future of American education, and the College of Education is “ground-zero” for the changes that will be seen throughout the U.S. in the next 20 years. It is in this context that we invite you to consider the College of Education at UNM as your professional destination.

This is an exciting time to come to UNM. We have just achieved our first endowed chair for educational renewal, Dr. Viola Florez. The college has taken a national leadership position in the area of native language renewal with the creation of the American Indian Language Policy Research and Teacher Training Center. We are the point-of-contact for a statewide effort to revitalize the education and training of educational leaders for the state and region. And as the premier college of education in the state, we are looked upon for leadership in helping solve the vexing problems of these times.

I am proud to have recently been named the dean of such a talented and energetic group of faculty, staff, and students. As the flagship college of education in the state of New Mexico, we are dedicated to applying all of our skills and knowledge to increase the learning outcomes of all our students throughout the continuum of education. We hope that you will browse our website to see the extraordinary variety of possibilities that await you in our college. Come join with us in an adventure that will engage and challenge you to new professional heights. We look forward to hearing from you soon!
