COE Scholarships
Alumni Public Service Scholarships
Each of six academic departments in the College of Education can award a $1,000 scholarship to a graduate student and a $500 scholarship to an undergraduate student enrolled in their department. The objective of these scholarships is to recognize, encourage and reward those College of Education students who provide significant but broadly defined public service and/or service to their profession. Each department will award based on its own criteria. The requirements for eligibility for this scholarship are:
- Be a junior, senior or graduate student making adequate progress toward their degree.
- Have been admitted to the College of Education.
- Have been admitted to a program within one of the six the Departments at the College of Education.Demonstrate having performed significant public service or service to the profession. Said public service can be unpaid or paid, as in the case of the Peace Corps, Americorps, Red Cross or other service organizations where such compensation is minimal. It may include but is not limited to public service rendered for community, government, religious or volunteer organizations inside or outside the United States. It may also include public service not connected to any organization. Service to the profession, however, shall be essentially unpaid. That is, being a graduate assistant or research assistant does not qualify, whereas volunteering to help conduct research, organize professional conferences, etc. would count, even if there was some type of minimal compensation. In all cases, the service to the profession would be above and beyond what is expected of a normal undergraduate or graduate student.
- Documentation of public service will include a brief narrative of the public service performed by the applicant, along with at least one letter of recommendation by someone who was in the position to attest to the performance of that public service.
