Georgia Abeita Oliver Memorial Endowment

  • Demonstrate academic potential having achieved a 2.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale.
  • Demonstrate financial need for scholarship assistance.
  • Be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student in the UNM College of Education, with first preference to students majoring in elementary education.
  • Students must be from one of the 19 pueblos of New Mexico, with first preference to students from Acoma, Laguna, and Isleta Pueblo.
  • The scholarship may be awarded to the same student in successive semesters until graduation, provided the recipient is making satisfactory academic progress toward a degree, and is maintaining a grade point average of 2.0 or better.


American GI Forum of Albuquerque Endowed Scholarship in Education

  • Full-time undergraduate admitted to the College of Education or full-time graduate student working on a MA, MS, EDSPC, or PhD in education.
  • First preference to student who is an Albuquerque resident (greater Metro area including Bernalillo county and Rio Rancho).
  • First preference to students of Hispanic heritage.
  • First preference to student who is a veteran.
  • GPA of 2.0 or better. 
  • The Scholarship may be awarded to the same student in successive semesters until graduation, provided student is making satisfactory academic progress toward a degree.  Each student must reapply and will enter the pool with a preference over new applicants.
  • Student must write to the Donor within 30 days of notification of the award and provide a summary of his/her background, career plans, and significance of the scholarship on his/her college experience and future aspirations. Failure to comply with this provision may lead to the revocation of the award at the discretion of the Donor.


The Juliet Fleischer Block and Betty Jo Block Marder Scholarship

Recipients of this scholarship must:

  • Have been born in New Mexico.
  • Admitted to the College of Education.
  • Be in her/his JUNIOR YEAR.
  • Plan to teach in a public school in New Mexico after graduation.
  • A thank you letter to the donor is required for the award to be processed; a letter must be sent to donor and a copy to the College of Education Development Office and to the Scholarship Coordinator must be received prior to submitting award form. Please send electronically to mfduran@unm.edu & currie@unm.edu.
  • The scholarship is awarded annually to the same recipient for 4 successive semesters until graduation, provided the recipient is making satisfactory academic progress toward a degree and maintains a 2.5 grade point average or better.


L. F. "Tow" and Pearl J. Diehm Sports Medicine Endowment

  • Demonstrate academic achievement (minimum 3.3 GPA on a 4.0 grading scale).
  • Be a graduate of an accredited athletic training education program from a college or university, with preference given to students graduating from New Mexico institutions.
  • Be a National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) member in good standing.
  • Be licensed or pursuing licensure within the state of New Mexico.
  • Be a BOC certified athletic trainer.
  • Be assisting with the education of UNM undergraduate athletic training students.
  • Be pursuing a graduate degree in the Department of Health Exercise and Sports Science in the UNM College of Education or pursuing a teaching endorsement in the UNM College of Education with the intent to pursue the profession of sports medicine as a means of livelihood.
  • Submit an application designed by the selection committee along with a copy of his/her official transcript, resume and three (3) letters of recommendation (including an academic reference and a character reference).


Carl P.  and Erma W. Dunifon Scholarship

  • Demonstrate academic achievement, GPA of 2.0 or better.
  • Demonstrate financial need (FAFSA).
  • Be enrolled as a full time student in the College of Education.
  • Preference shall be given to a single student without children.
  • May be awarded to same student in successive semesters until graduation while maintaining a 2.0 or better.


Helen Esterly Endowed Memorial Scholarship

  • Demonstrate academic achievement, GPA of 3.0 or better.
  • Enrolled in the College of Education completing 60 semester hours of course work at UNM.
  • Awarded to an undergraduate majoring in Secondary Education.
  • Scholarship is awarded on merit and demonstrated performance only, irrespective of financial need.


Family Studies Memorial Scholarship

  • Student must be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student (12 or more hours) in the Family Studies Program, or
  • as a graduate student (9 or more hours) in the Family Studies Program.
  • Undergraduate student must have been enrolled at UNM full-time for three (3) semesters and current semester.
  • Award will be given to student with the highest GPA.
  • Will be awarded on the basis of economic need (FAFSA).
  • Scholarship will be given to declared majors at the undergraduate or graduate level.


Nancy L. Fraser Doctoral Scholarship Fund

  • Demonstrate academic achievement.
  • Demonstrate financial need (FAFSA).
  • Be enrolled as a full-time doctoral student in the College of Education.
  • Scholarship may be awarded to the same student in successive semesters until completion of the doctorate, provided the student is making satisfactory academic progress toward the degree.


Dr. Dolores Gonzales Memorial Endowed Scholarship

  • Awarded to a full time junior, senior, or graduate student.
  • Demonstrate academic achievement maintaining an acceptable GPA of 2.5 or better.
  • Demonstrate financial need (FAFSA).
  • Preference will be given to student actively involved in Bilingual, Bicultural Education.
  • Student must write a brief essay on his/her interests in Bilingual, Bicultural Education.
  • May be awarded to same student in successive semesters providing student reapplies for scholarship.


Jeanne Hopler Endowed Scholarship

  • Recipients will be female.
  • Student must be enrolled in the College of Education specializing in K-12 education.
  • May be awarded to same student in successive semesters, provided the recipient is making satisfactory academic progress toward a degree and is maintaining a GPA of 2.5 or better.


Byron Henry Ives Memorial Endowed Scholarship

  • Scholarship intended to assist women seeking advanced teacher training.
  • Demonstrate financial need (FAFSA).
  • Must be resident of the State of New Mexico having completed a high school education.
  • Preference shall be given to applicants who reside in Albuquerque.


Helen and Wilson Howard Ivins Memorial Scholarship

  • Demonstrate financial need (FAFSA).
  • Be enrolled as a full time doctoral student in the College of Education.
  • Completed comprehensive examinations leading to a doctoral degree.
  • Pursuing a career focusing on Secondary Education.
  • May be awarded to the same student in successive semesters until completion of the doctorate, provided the recipient is making satisfactory academic progress toward the degree.


Mary Karen Janes Endowed Memorial Graduate Scholarship

  • Awarded to graduate students in Education and plan to apply their graduate studies in the classroom, teaching children in the fifth grade or under.
  • Demonstrate academic achievement.
  • Demonstrate financial need (FAFSA).
  • Scholarship may be awarded to the same student in four (4) successive semesters until graduation, provided recipient is making satisfactory academic progress toward a degree and is maintaining a grade point of 3.0 or better.


Kiersten Keller Endowed Scholarship in Special Education

  • Enrolled as a student in his/her fourth year of study at the UNM College of Education pursuing a degree in Special Education, Mild to Moderate Retardation Subdivision.
  • Be a non-traditional student pursuing a teaching degree and State of New Mexico Teaching Licensure as first preference.
  • Scholarship may be awarded to the same student in successive semesters until graduation, provided the recipient is making satisfactory academic progress toward a degree.


Melissa and Joshua Keller Endowed Scholarship for Fourth-Year Education Students

  • Enrolled as a student in his/her fourth (4) year of study as an undergraduate at the UNM College of Education.
  • Be involved in a practicum (i.e., be engaged in student teaching) as required to complete his/her degree.
  • Scholarship may be awarded to the same student in successive semesters until graduation, provided the recipient is making satisfactory academic progress toward a degree.


Flonnie Ellen Matherly Endowed Scholarship in Elementary Education

  • Demonstrate academic achievement.
  • Demonstrate financial need for scholarship assistance (FAFSA).
  • Be enrolled as a full time student in the UNM College of Education.
  • First preference shall be given to a non-traditional student in Elementary Special Education who planning a career in New Mexico.
  • Scholarship may be awarded to the same student in successive semesters until graduation, provided the recipient is making satisfactory academic progress toward a degree and is maintaining a grade point average of 3.0 or better.


Joe S. and Dell Miera Memorial Scholarship

  • Be admitted to a master's program in Teacher Education at the UNM College of Education.
  • Demonstrate academic achievement with a GPA of 2.8 in both undergraduate and graduate courses from an accredited college or university.
  • Be making satisfactory progress toward graduation by enrolling in at least 6 hours per semester.
  • Preference will be given to students who are native New Mexicans, particularly those who were raised in New Mexico and who are the third or more generation of native New Mexicans.
  • Demonstrate financial need (FAFSA).
  • Pursuing a career in Secondary Education.
  • The scholarship recipient must acknowledge the donor by letter within 30 days of notification of the award, providing a brief summary of his/her background and career plans.  This acknowledgement must be submitted to the UNM College of Education Office of Development to be forwarded to the donor.  Failure to comply with this provision of the agreement may lead to the revocation of the award at the discretion of the Donor(s).


John Milne Scholarship Fund

  • Must be upper classmen.
  • Planning to teach in a public school upon graduation.
  • Awarded on the basis of financial need (FAFSA), ability, and character.


Marion Monical Endowed Scholarship in Education

  • Awarded to a UNM College of Education junior or senior student during their student teaching.


MyBank Student Teaching Scholarship

  • Be an enrolled senior at UNM College of Education pursuing a teaching degree and be engaged in student teaching.
  • Demonstrate academic potential having achieved an overall GPA of 2.5.
  • Demonstrate financial need for scholarship assistance in accord with UNM financial need guidelines (FAFSA).
  • Be a graduate of a public or private high school located within the public school boundaries of Belen, Los Lunas or Mountainair, New Mexico or be a customer (or have a family member who is a customer) of MyBank.
  • At least two (2) of the recipients shall be minority students.


The Emma May Olson Memorial Scholarship in Education

  • Native American student as first preference and only if no qualified Native American student can be identified may the scholarship be awarded to other students.
  • Recipients must be enrolled full-time in the College of Education.


Leroy and Dora Ortiz Scholarship in Bilingual Education

  • Awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student pursuing a degree in education and specializing in Spanish/English bilingual instruction.
  • Be fluent in Spanish and English and express a commitment to the concept of philosophy of bilingual education.
  • Be earning a degree in teacher education with specialization anywhere from preschool through secondary education.
  • Demonstrate academic achievement, with GPA consistent with admissions standards for teacher education and/or graduate admissions and be making satisfactory progress toward graduation.
  • Preference will be given to the student who has received the scholarship in the previous year, assuming he/she demonstrates satisfactory progress towards graduation, for a maximum total of two years.
  • Special consideration will be given to applicants expressing a commitment to teach in New Mexico or the Southwest region.
  • Scholarship recipient must acknowledge the donor by letter within 30 days of notification of the award, whether initial or annual review, providing a brief summary of his/her background and career plans. Acknowledgement must be submitted to the College of Education Office of Development to be forwarded to the donor.  Failure to comply with this provision of the agreement may lead to the revocation of the award at the discretion of the Donor(s).


Arthur and Phoebe Pack Environmental Education Fund

  • Demonstrate academic achievement, with a GPA of 3.25 or higher.
  • Be enrolled as a full-time student in the UNM College of Education.
  • Provide a letter of interest that describes short and long-term professional goals, and skills and strengths being brought to the fellowship experience.
  • Provide an updated resume.
  • Submit a proposed plan for participation in the environmental education program.
  • The scholarship may be awarded to the same student in successive semesters until graduation, provided the recipient is a full-time student making satisfactory academic progress toward a degree and is maintaining a grade point average of 3.25 or better.


Oliver L. and Louise R. Pembroke Memorial Scholarship Fund

  • Awarded to a undergraduate student pursuing a degree in education.
  • Recipient shall have been admitted to the College of Education in a program leading to an undergraduate degree in education.
  • Demonstrate academic achievement.
  • Demonstrate financial need (FAFSA).
  • *The award is renewable annually provided that the student is achieving satisfactory progress toward his/her degree.
  • The scholarship recipient must acknowledge the Donor's Representative by letter within 30 days of notification of the award, whether initial or annual review, providing a brief summary of his/her background and career plans.  This acknowledgement must be submitted to the College of Education Office of Development to be forwarded to the donor's representative.  Failure to comply with this provision of the agreement may lead to the revocation of the award at the discretion of the Donor Representative.


Alex C. Peralta Memorial Scholarship

  • Demonstrate academic achievement by achieving a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or better.
  • Demonstrate financial need for scholarship assistance (FAFSA).
  • Be an Education major.
  • Be a junior or senior.
  • Scholarship may be awarded to the same student in successive semesters until graduation, provided the recipient is making satisfactory academic progress toward a degree and is maintaining a GPA of 3.5 or better.


Lou Rosasco, Jr. Endowed Memorial Scholarship

  • Recipients shall be Educational Foundation Majors (Psychology).
  • Must be enrolled in the College of Education.


Helen L. Sagl Memorial Scholarship in Education

  • Purpose of fund is to provide academic scholarships for women.
  • Majoring in elementary education.
  • In their final year of college.
  • Who have maintained a 3.0 GPA.
  • Who will graduate with a degree in education.
  • Based on financial need (FAFSA).


Stephanie D. Salazar Scholarship Fund

  • Awarded to one student either graduate or undergraduate enrolled in the College of Education.
  • Plan to teach in New Mexico after graduation or currently be teaching in New Mexico.
  • Demonstrate academic achievement by maintaining a GPA of 2.5.
  • Have had direct contact with breast cancer, either themselves or a close family member.
  • Write an essay the subject of which will be "How breast cancer has affected my life."
  • **The scholarship award recipient must also acknowledge the donor Cecilia A. Martinez Salazar by letter within 30 days of notification of the award, whether initial or annual review, providing a brief summary of her/his background and career plans.  This acknowledgment must be submitted to the College of Education Office of Development to be forwarded to the donor.  Failure to comply with this provision of the agreement may lead to the revocation of the award.


Josephine H. Selvage Memorial Scholarship

  • Awarded to an undergraduate student pursuing a degree in elementary education within the College of Education.
  • Awarded to one student each year.
  • Recipient shall be admitted to the College of Education in a program leading to an undergraduate degree in elementary education.
  • Plan to teach in New Mexico after graduation.
  • Demonstrate academic achievement by maintaining a GPA of 2.8 at UNM and /or other accredited institutions of higher education.
  • Demonstrate financial need (FAFSA).
  • Be making satisfactory progress toward graduation.
  • Preference for first-time awards will be given to students in their junior year, as it is the intention of the Donor to award the scholarship to the same student for a maximum of two years up until graduation, assuming that the student is making adequate progress towards graduation.
  • The scholarship recipient must acknowledge the donor by letter within 30 days of notification of the award, whether initial or annual review, providing a brief summary of her/his background and career plans.  This acknowledgement must be submitted to the College of Education Office of Development to be forwarded to the donor.  Failure to comply with this provision of the agreement may lead to the revocation of the award at the discretion of the Donor.


Dr. Edward Sengel, III Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund

  • Be a doctoral student working on his/her dissertation in the College of Education.
  • Be 40 years of age or older.
  • Be in the top 10% of his/her class and/or demonstrate outstanding academic achievement.
  • Demonstrate financial need for scholarship assistance.
  • Recipients may compete for the scholarship in successive years.


Virginia Curran Shipman Doctoral Fellowship

  • Demonstrate academic achievement with a GPA of 3.5 in both undergraduate and graduate degree programs from an accredited college or university.
  • Meet the graduate program admission requirements.
  • Be seeking a doctorate in the Family Studies Program.
  • Provide a 500 word description of their current research objective.
  • To facilitate diversity of perspectives in understanding children and families that is critical to the Family Studies Program's mission, first preference will be given to students who are graduates of an out-of-state or foreign institution and who are recent or non-New Mexico residents.
  • Fellowship may be awarded to the same student in successive semester until completion of his/her doctoral program, provided the recipient is making satisfactory progress toward a degree and is maintaining a GPA of 3.5 or better.

  • Teaching as a career
  • Merit and need based


Elizabeth P. Simpson Memorial Fund

  • Recipients must be female.
  • Demonstrate financial need (FAFSA).
  • Be concentrating her studies in the fields of Nutrition or Family Studies while pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree.
  • Must have a GPA of 2.5 or better.
  • The scholarship may be awarded to the same student in successive semesters until graduation, provided the recipient is making satisfactory academic progress toward a degree and is maintaining a GPA of 2.5 or better.


Dr. Charles R. Spain Memorial Fund

  • Scholarship is for graduate or undergraduate students majoring in Education.
  • Demonstrate academic achievement.
  • Demonstrate financial need (FAFSA).


Vincent James Tapia Inspirational Scholarship Fund: Knowledge is Power

  • Demonstrate financial need (FAFSA).
  • Students who have displayed academic qualifications with at least a 3.0 GPA.
  • Students who have a demonstrated commitment to the teaching profession and although not a requirement for selection, it is the Donor 's hope that the recipient of the award will consider serving as a teacher in New Mexico for some period of time.
  • Preference will be given to a male undergraduate Hispanic student.
  • Students must write an essay of not less than 200 or more than 350 words explaining "How knowledge is power for them and how they came to that realization."
  • Student must be a full time student enrolled in the UNM College of Education.
  • The scholarship may be given to the same student for two (2) successive academic years as long as the student continues to meet the established criteria.


Nelle Gooch Travelstead Scholarship

  • Purpose of this scholarship is to identify, recognize, and aid outstanding students in the College of Education who are committed to teaching in the public schools of New Mexico for at least two (2) years after graduating.
  • Be a undergraduate enrolled in the College of Education.
  • Must have 60 hours at UNM with a GPA of 3.0.
  • The same undergraduate may be selected no more than 4 consecutive semesters, the committee must be persuaded of sufficient progress for that long.


Charles W. White and the John J. Hanzel Educational Administration Scholarship

  • The scholarship will be awarded to a graduate student pursuing an MA in Educational leadership with administrative licensure.
  • Be a graduate of Albuquerque Public Schools.
  • Be admitted to the UNM College of Education's Educational Leadership Program.
  • Demonstrated academic achievement with a GPA of 3.0 in both undergraduate and graduate degree programs from an accredited college or university.
  • Demonstrate financial need.
  • Be enrolled in at least 6 units per semester.
  • Be making satisfactory progress toward graduation.
  • The scholarship must be acknowledged by letter within 30 days of notification of the award, whether initial or annual renewal, providing a brief summary of his/her background and career plans.  Failure to comply with this provision of the agreement may lead to the revocation of the award at the discretion of the Donors.


The Jim Whitlow Art Education and Music Education Scholarship

  • Awarded to students majoring in Art Education. 
  • Recipient must be a junior, senior or graduat student making adequate progress toward graduation.
  • Be born in New Mexico or have graduated from a New Mexico high school
  • Have been admitted to the College of Education and be enrolled in a Teacher Education program, which leads to New Mexico Teaching Licensure.  A graduate student who already has New Mexico Teaching Licensure is not required to be enrolled in a Teacher Education Program, provided he/she already has an endorsement in Art Education.
  • An Art Education student must be accepted into the Art Education Program.
  • Demonstrate academic achievement
  • Demonstrate financial need (FAFSA)
  • For the 2010-2011 academic year the scholarship will follow the scholarship guidelines of awarding the scholarship in even years to a Art Education student and odd years to a Music Education student.


Marjorie Yepsen and Carleen F. Farnam Endowed Scholarship Fund

  • Awarded to a undergraduate student
  • Demonstrate academic achievement by maintaining a GPA of 3.4 or higher
  • Be enrolled as a full time student majoring in Education
  • Students may receive the award in consecutive years up to four (4) years provided they maintain the requirements outlined above.  A student may not receive more than $1,500 per year in awards from this fund.


Kim and Randy Youngblood and Julie and Chris Keller Endowed Scholarship in Special Education

  • Students must be enrolled as a student in the UNM College of Education pursuing a degree in Special Education and with an emphasis in the Mental Retardation and Severe Disabilities Subdivision.
  • Scholarship may be awarded to the same student in successive semesters until graduation, provided the recipient is making satisfactory academic progress toward a degree.
