Reflective Inquiry Showcase – December 2, 2009, 4:40-5:30 p.m., Travelstead Hall

Please join us for the fall 2009 graduate student Reflective Inquiry Showcase. Students in Cheryl Torrez’s research course, Reflective Inquiry, will present their inquiry research projects. Sharing research findings with the larger university community is a final step in inquiry. The students look forward to receiving your feedback and responding to your questions about their research, as well as in engaging with you in dialogue about their research projects. OUR FACULTY: Dr. Cathy Qi, Assoc. Professor in Special Education

Dr. Cathy Qi was named a “Diversity Champion” by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). ASHA considers members Diversity Champions who have made significant contributions to advance multicultural infusion in the professions of speech-language pathology, audiology, or speech-language or hearing science.

Dr. Qi has been a strong advocate for young children who are from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds (CLD) and who are from low-income families, specifically, with regards to the accurate identification of language disorders in this population. She has published and presented numerous papers on issues related to the use of culturally appropriate language assessments with CLD children. Read more...

One can hardly imagine more challenging times for educators than those we are faced with today! We find ourselves at a crossroads where the intersection of demand and quality have come front-and-center for the profession. The College of Education at the University of New Mexico is aware of and is responding to this clarion call for definitive reform of our educational systems. We are in a unique position in New Mexico, the first minority/majority state in the U.S. and one that exemplifies all the challenges of the 21st century. For example, we have the 27th largest urban public school district in the country here—in the Albuquerque Public Schools. We have a large number of rural and geographically isolated school districts throughout the fifth largest state in the nation. And we have a unique multilingual and multicultural environment that includes large immigrant populations of second-language learners. Continued ...
