I am pleased to welcome you to the Department of Educational Specialties. Both the Art Education and Special Education programs and faculty are located in this department, working to provide opportunities for students and others to work toward a better world.
The range of career possibilities is wide. Whether you are interested in learning how to help children express themselves in art, understand their visual culture, or how to integrate studio arts with teaching - this is the place to be. Or perhaps you want to know how to differentiate instruction for children and young people with special education needs, pursue social justice for all students, or learn to conduct research on learning and disability - this is the place to be.
We offer opportunities.
As you look at the information on this website you will see many wonderful chances for you to be a part of the Educational Specialties community - as a student, instructor, visitor, staff member, or supportive friend. I hope that if you have questions or suggestions that you will contact me at ruthl@unm.edu or contact any of our faculty or staff. We are always looking for ways to improve our programs, collaborate on research, or contribute to the community and we want to hear from you.
We have excellent faculty.
Many of them have been nominated for or been awarded teaching honors. And their scholarship is exciting. For example, in 2007-2008, our faculty published four books, four book chapters, three creative works, and nine articles. They conducted approximately six contracts and grants. They participated as speakers in 35 national and international conferences. The benefits of this teaching excellence and scholarship are available to you through state-of-the art undergraduate and graduate courses. You may even be able to present or publish with a faculty member for a state or national audience, or exhibit your art in one of the exhibits in the Masley Hall Art Gallery.
We have excellent staff.
Each of our staff members has unique expertise and a customer-service attitude. If you need assistance, we have a knowledgeable staff member who will guide you to the best result we can provide.
We work with schools.
In addition to our faculty's ongoing individual collaborations with various school districts, we have two formal partnerships with the Albuquerque Public Schools: The APS/UNM Partnership in Mental Retardation and Severe Disabilities; and the APS/UNM Partnership in Educational Diagnostician Preparation. We value our relations with the school districts around the state. If your district is interested in working in partnership with us, or simply discussing future trends, I would be pleased to talk with you.
Again, welcome to the Department of Educational Specialties. Explore our offerings and contact us. We want to meet you!
