DESCRIPTION

The Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) program of studies leading to the degree of Bachelor of Science in Education is designed to prepare the student to teach physical education in elementary, middle, and/or junior and senior high schools (K-12). The program of studies includes 57 hours of general education coursework and 76 hours of content preparation. Students completing the program are eligible to apply for a teaching license in New Mexico. The PETE faculty strives to equip students with the content and pedagogical content knowledge necessary to smoothly transition from pre-service to in-service teaching.

APPLICATION PROCESS

To apply for admission to the Physical Education Teacher Education Program, the student should go to the COE Advisement Office in Hokona Hall (505-277-3190) to obtain the necessary information and paperwork. The student must pass the New Mexico Teacher Assessment Basic Skills Test with a score of 240 or greater. The student must complete the COE application and return it to the Advisement Office in Hokona Hall. The student must also complete the Checkpoint 1 application and submit it to Dr. Napper-Owen, Program Coordinator, in Johnson Center 1155A. APPLICATION DEADLINES

Applications to the College of Education are accepted on an on-going basis after the first semester of coursework within the program. Checkpoint 1 applications are due February 15 of the second semester of enrollment in the program courses. Note: While applications are accepted on an on-going basis, please allow extra time for processing during the summer months.
