About the Boilerplate

The information provided below is meant to assist you as you prepare contract proposals and grants. It is a compilation of information that includes brief descriptions of the University’s colleges and schools, centers and institutes, galleries and museums, and statistical information.

The University of New Mexico

Founded in 1889, The University of New Mexico now occupies 600 acres along old Route 66 in the heart of Albuquerque, a city of more than 700,000 people. As of 2008, the campuses of the University of New Mexico served 32,732 students, and had a total operating and capital budget of $2.03 billion. In the previous academic year, UNM awarded 5,051 degrees and certificates.

The University of New Mexico offers access to high quality education and research service programs by providing students the values, habits of mind, knowledge, and skills they need to be enlightened citizens and to contribute to the state and national economies. Building on its educational, research and creative resources, the University provides services directly to the City and State, including health care, social services, policy studies, commercialization of inventions, and cultural events.

The University of New Mexico main campus and branches qualify as "institutions with high Hispanic enrollment" per the U.S. Department of Education Accredited Postsecondary Education Minority Institution list. In addition, UNM–Albuquerque is the only Hispanic-Serving Institution in the United States that is also classified by the Carnegie Foundation as RU/VH (Research University–Very High research activity).  Detailed HSI/MI rankings

 

The College of Education

The COE’s mission is the study and practice of education through teaching, research, and service, emphasizing excellence and diversity through people, ideas, and innovation. COE has six departments with an undergraduate enrollment of 1,072 students and a graduate/professional student enrollment of 1,104 as of fall 2008. The Department of Educational Leadership and Organizational Learning; Department of Educational Specialties; Department of Health, Exercise, and Sport Sciences; Department of Individual, Family, and Community Education; Department of Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies, and the Department of Teacher Education award bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees, as well as graduate certificates and endorsements.

Valuable resources and facilities are available to staff, faculty, and students, such as the Graduate Writing Studio, Publications/Copy Center, and Johnson Center, which includes a natatorium, nutrition lab, and exercise physiology and therapy labs. The Technology and Education Center provides computer facilities and comprehensive technological support.

In addition, the College of Education houses Tireman Library, which maintains a collection of 100,000 education related books and materials that focus on multiculturalism.

College of Education faculty are actively engaged in research and instructional development. COE faculty were awarded $5.3 million in FY 2008, including funding from federal agencies, the State of New Mexico, industry, foundations, and national labs. The University of New Mexico is ranked in the top 100 institutions by NSF because of its active sponsored funding portfolio.

The College of Arts and Sciences mission is to create new knowledge in the arts and sciences, to disseminate that knowledge to students as it is created, and apply that knowledge to the pressing issues of the day at local, state, and international sites. Founded in 1906, the School of Engineering offers outstanding engineering and computer science education to students at the bachelor's, master's, and doctoral levels, awarding over 400 total degrees annually.

College of Fine Arts - LINK

The College of Fine Arts nurtures creative thinking and supports innovative work across all disciplines by providing in-depth training and mentoring in the complex skills necessary for achievement in the arts. The College integrates teaching, research, and creative work in order to prepare students to participate in the evolving disciplinary and professional practices of the arts.

School of Architecture and Planning - LINK

The School of Architecture and Planning, founded by an act of the Territorial Legislature in 1889, had the role of designing and building settlements in the Rio Grande Valley.  The School has been prominent in the development of the region since statehood in 1912. The School has strong historic ties with both the College of Engineering and the College of Fine Arts on the main campus.

The School of Law is the state’s only law school and is located on the University of New Mexico’s North Campus. The School’s clinical program, a requirement for graduation, is recognized nationally as one of the best, offering students a broad range of practical opportunities.

Health Sciences Center - LINK
School of Medicine - LINK

The School of Medicine is committed to remaining a world-class institution in three equally valued and inter-related missions of patient care, education, and research. The success of these missions require the integration of the School of Medicine and UNM Hospitals and a shared destiny with the University of New Mexico. The goal is to provide top-notch clinical services to the residents of New Mexico while being recognized as a respected School of Medicine training doctors for New Mexico.

College of Pharmacy - LINK

The mission of the College of Pharmacy is to develop innovative leaders in pharmaceutical care and research who enhance the quality of life for the people of New Mexico and the United States. Since its founding in 1945, as the first health professional program on the University of New Mexico campus, over 2,500 pharmacists and 100 pharmaceutical scientists have graduated from the College.

College of Nursing - LINK

The College of Nursing is a fully accredited component of the distinguished Health Sciences Center. With over 50 years of service, the College of Nursing constitutes a vital resource for the state of New Mexico by maintaining a full range of superior programs in traditional areas while addressing the special needs of a highly diverse population with thoughtfully designed programs to make nursing education available to everyone in the state.

Branch Colleges

UNM has four branch colleges that respond specifically to the unique needs and multicultural backgrounds of their respective communities by offering community education programs, career education—including certificate and associate degree programs, and transfer programs that prepare students for upper division entry into colleges and universities.

Center on Alcoholism, Substance Abuse, and Addictions, CASAA - LINK

CASAA seeks to reduce suffering caused by substance use and other addictive behaviors by generating quality prevention and treatment research.

Center for High Performance Computing, CHPC - LINK

The mission of CPHC is to support faculty led, computing based, and research throughout the University of New Mexico.

Center for Micro-Engineered Materials, CMEM - LINK

The Center provides a focal point for materials science research and education at UNM towards developing new interdisciplinary technologies.

Center for High Tech Materials, CHTM - LINK

CHTM is a nationally recognized center for photonics and microelectronic research.

Robert Wood Johnson Center for Health Policy - LINK

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) Center for Health Policy is a collaborative project between the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of New Mexico.

 

Libraries

University Libraries is the only member of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) in New Mexico. University Libraries serves the entire state—providing access to materials, instruction, and research.

Museums and Galleries


UNM is home to a multitude of Museums and Galleries:


Maxwell Museum of Anthropology - LINK

The Maxwell Museum was founded in 1932 as the Museum of Anthropology of the University of New Mexico, becoming the first public museum in Albuquerque. Maxwell Museum includes associated research institutes—the Office of Contract Archaeology, the Alfonso Ortiz Center for Intercultural Studies, and the Maxwell Center for Anthropological Research.  The museum represents a comprehensive center for cultural studies and public education.

UNM Art Museum & Permanent Collection - LINK

With close to 30,000 objects, the University Art Museum houses by far the largest fine art collections in New Mexico. These collections enable us to fulfill our mandated missions: to educate about and through art, to directly support the academic programs of the University of New Mexico, to enrich the cultural life of the city and the state, and to contribute to the international scholarly community. The Art Museum holds over 10,000 photographs, from early daguerreotypes to contemporary digital images, by almost every recognized master of the medium (and also by anonymous photojournalists and amateurs). The print collection which contains close to 17,000 examples of the entire history of fine art printmaking. A special emphasis is given to the history of lithography, from its invention (in 1798) to now.  Highlighted collections

The Raymond Jonson Gallery

The Raymond Jonson Gallery has a collection and extensive archive. Within the archive, documents and catalogues are available as well as works by Modernist artists.
