After you have completed at least 26 hours and have an overall GPA of 2.5, the College of Education allows you to apply for admission to College of Education programs. The Family Studies Program requires that you also have either successfully completed (C or better) FS 213 and FS 281 or have completed at least 6 FS hours at UNM and are currently enrolled in FS 213 and FS 281. In the latter case, your class standing in both FS 213 and FS 281 should reflect satisfactory progress (C or better). If you meet these requirements, you may complete an Admission Packet provided to students by the College of Education Advisement Office located in Hokona Hall. The Packet contains an Application Form and a Data Sheet. In addition to completing these two forms you are required to attach a current transcript, and write a statement (i.e., letter of intent) describing your reasons for selecting Family Studies as a major.

Masters
Application materials for admission into the Family Studies Master’s Degree program are available at Simpson Hall or by calling (505) 277-4535 or from the Program website. Please submit letter of intent, three letters of recommendation, an unofficial transcript from all undergraduate and graduate institutions, and any additional materials (if required) to the Family Studies Program (or Department) Office at Simpson Hall. The Graduate Application Form is available on-line with the Office of Admissions at UNM and must be submitted to the Office of Admissions. The completed graduate application form, including a non-refundable application fee of $50.00 and one official transcript from all undergraduate and graduate institutions (except UNM transcript) must be sent to the Office of Admissions (Graduate Studies).
It is recommended that all relevant paperwork be submitted to the Admissions and FS Program two weeks prior to deadlines, which are March 15 for summer and fall semesters and October 15 for spring semester. Late applications may be accepted per UNM Catalog. Offers of admission are made only for the semester for which the student applies. Failure to enroll or to properly defer admission will cancel the student’s graduate student status. Any student who is not enrolled in graduate-level courses for three or more consecutive semesters (including summer) must apply for re-admission, using a special form that must be filed with the Office of Admissions by the above dates. An application fee is not required for re-admission status.
Students from academic backgrounds other than Family Studies are encouraged to apply. Students are expected to have a GPA of 3.0 in the last 60 hours of undergraduate study. Other admission criteria are relevant coursework, well articulated personal statement, related work experience, multicultural experience/education, and academic references. All full-time faculty independently review and rate each applicant based on the materials submitted. Following discussion of these ratings and resultant score by the faculty, a vote is taken and both the Family Studies Graduate Coordinator and the Office of Graduate Studies communicate the resulting decision to the applicant.
