Welcome to the Health Education Program
The Health Education program at the University of New Mexico offers a unique and innovative program in response to the changing health needs of the state and the nation.
The goals of the Health Education Program are to:
- Prepare students from diverse cultures and tailor their educational program to respond to the health needs of the groups they represent.
- Prepare health promotion professionals to develop health enhancement programs based on the strengths of New Mexico’s rich and diverse cultures.
- Promote scholarly research that explores the complex and interrelated health education, cultural, and social issues of children, youth, and families.
- Prepare health education professionals to work collaboratively with federal, state, and local health departments to prevent disease and promote health and education agencies.
- Prepare health education professionals to implement prevention interventions which support the healthy growth and development of children, youth, adults, and families.
Graduates gain proficiency in working with culturally diverse communities. They develop, implement, and evaluate health education and promotion interventions and initiatives that reduce risky behaviors and related morbidity and mortality.
Students work actively with communities, hospitals, agencies, and schools to design and conduct culturally appropriate health behavior enhancement programs. They develop and implement research and evaluation protocols relevant to the needs, strengths, and desires identified by communities.
Students have research and program opportunities in the UNM CDC funded Prevention Center, University Wellness Center, Center for Population Health, and the Center for Addictions, Alcoholism, and Substance Abuse. City and state health departments and HMO’s located in New Mexico offer research and practice opportunities. A variety of work site health promotion efforts also offer students research and program development opportunities.
