Health Education Program

We welcome your interest in the Health Education program at the University of New Mexico. We hope you explore our website and learn about our degree programs, faculty and research interests. The Health Education program in the College of Education at the University of New Mexico offers a unique and innovative program in response to the changing health needs of the state and the nation.

Graduates of our program gain proficiency in working with culturally diverse communities. They develop, implement, and evaluate health education and promotion interventions and initiatives that reduce risky behaviors and related morbidity and mortality. Students work actively with communities, hospitals, agencies, and schools to design and conduct culturally appropriate health behavior enhancement programs. They develop and implement research and evaluation protocols relevant to the needs, strengths, and desires identified by communities.

The Health Education faculty are extremely student-oriented and possess a broad range of experience, skills and knowledge in the field of health education. They are actively involved in high quality teaching, research and service to UNM students, the state of New Mexico and at the national level.

We offer a Bachelor of Science (B.S. Ed.) and a Master of Science (M.S.) in Health Education.  Both degree programs offer a concentration in Community Health Education. If you are interested in teaching School Health Education in grades 7-12, we offer a Health Education Teaching Endorsement Minor for undergraduates who are already in a licensure program. If you already possess a teaching license, we offer a Health Education Teaching Endorsement for In-service Teachers option as you pursue your Masters in Community Health Education.
