NES Essential Components of Reading Instruction Exam

All K-8 teacher candidates seeking a New Mexico Elementary Education K-8 license as of July 1, 2012 are required to take the NES Essential Components of Reading Instruction exam.

The exam is 150 multiple-choice questions. You are given three hours to take the exam. Candidates will be assessed on the following content domains:

  • Foundations of Reading an Alphabetic Language
  • Word Analysis and Fluency Development
  • Vocabulary and Comprehension Development
  • Reading Different Types of Text
  • The Literate Environment and the Classroom Reading Professional

Program Supports for UNM College of Education Students

Coursework

Students in the Elementary Education K-8 Licensure program and the MA with Alternative Route to Licensure program take two reading methods courses and a language arts methods course. Dual License students take three reading methods courses and a language arts methods course. Due to the knowledge and understandings required to pass the exam, students are encouraged to complete these courses before taking the exam.

Exam Preparation

Current students in the Elementary Education K-8 Licensure program, MA with Alternative Route to Licensure program, and Dual License program have access to test preparation materials through the Center for Student Success portal. UNM alumni of these programs also have access to the same test preparation. These materials will provide practice items and informational feedback based on correct/incorrect responses:

Self-Directed Preparation

Many exams designed to measure knowledge of reading instruction for licensure in other states have similar content to the New Mexico Foundations of Reading exam. The following will provide information and test practice from similar tests:

Plan of Action

  1. Review materials and notes from your reading and language arts methods courses.
  2. Assess your current knowledge through the Center for Student Success practice test.
  3. Take the sample tests from other states, paying careful attention to content domains where you need more practice.
