B.S.Ed. in Physical Education

The PETE program has three points in program (Checkpoints) for admission, admission to student teaching, and exit from the B.S.Ed. in Physical Education program.

CHECKPOINT 1 occurs in the spring of the sophomore year as students screen into the College of Education. Students must have passed the NMTA Basic Skills test, have a 2.5 GPA overall, and a B- or better (2.75) in all content area courses. Two important aspects of CHECKPOINT 1 are the entry-level portfolio based on the New Mexico Competencies for Entry Level Physical Education Teachers and the dispositional rating of students by the instructors of their initial PETE coursework. CHECKPOINT 1 candidates must receive an acceptable rating on 7 of 11 criteria to move on conditionally with courses in the PETE program.
