Grow Your Own Teacher Network

The “Grow Your Own Teacher Act” is a state-funded scholarship opportunity designed for Educational Assistants to continue working while completing an academic program that will result in obtaining an NM teaching license for a future teaching career.

The UNM College of Education (COE) is a proud partner of this new scholarship opportunity, and we are internally classifying it as the “Grow Your Own Teacher Network”.

What is it? GYOT provides eligible Educational Assistants:

  • A Pathway – for those who do not have licensure, but want to become a NM teacher
  • Funding – up to $6,000 per year, with a 5-year maximum
  • Professional Leave – State-mandated leave from the district

Am I eligible?

Prospective students that are interested in this opportunity must meet the following requirements:

  1. Must be a U.S. citizen and a NM resident
  2. Previously or are currently employed as an Educational Assistant for a 2-year minimum
  3. Must be in good standing with the district
  4. Have not earned appropriate educational credentials to be licensed as a teacher
  5. This funding is need-based. To determine if you qualify, please fill out a FAFSA and enter UNM Code: 002663. Only individuals that are Pell eligible are qualified to receive the GYOT scholarship
  6. Petition your district by filling out the sample form
  7. Apply to UNM and meet the admission requirements
  8. Apply to your designated COE program
